‘Well this course really made me sit up and think . Sometimes and I’m sure I’m not the only one , but when your in a hurry you will take short cuts , you will take the first parking space you come to , you will just rush , and not take a blind bit of notice if it is safe or not . I really enjoyed this course because it’s made me realise I ought to stop and think , which to be honest I never have done . So I would definitely give this course a gold star .Thank You .’

Who is this for?
Anyone whose work takes them away from work into situations where they are alone.
How long is the course?
35 minutes of interactive training.

You will learn:

1. How to keep yourself safe

You will learn about why some people are more vulnerable and the reasons for that. We give you step by step guidance to preparing for a visit where you will be alone with an unknown person, and remind you to pay attention to your instincts.

2. Be prepared

You will learn how to get around safely, covering the risks associated with public transport, walking and driving yourself. We give you crucial reminders, such as ensuring that your mobile phone battery is sufficiently charged.

3. Managing difficult situations

You will learn the early warning signs of aggressive intent, ways to calm things down and distract the aggressor – these skills are taught through watching enactments of different scenarios. You will also learn about personal alarms you can carry, the best ways to escape any given situation and the procedure for reporting it if you are attacked.

4. Tell someone where you are going

We give you a list of the personal information that should be kept on file at work for use in case someone needs to trace you, and the details that you should give to someone at work before you leave for a visit or other situation of being alone: Where you are going, who you are meeting, when you expect to be back at work. This enables you to be traced in the event that you do not come back when expected.
You will also learn how to do a personal risk assessment for times when you are out of the workplace alone. This might highlight areas where your manager can take preventative action or provide you with equipment or training to increase your personal safety.

5. Testing your learning

On completion of all of the above sections of the course you will take a 20-question multiple-choice test. You can then get a printed certificate to show you have completed the Safety while Working Away from the Workplace training.
